Description

This module serves as an introduction to the practical aspects of teaching. Students will cover such foundational matters as basic personal and interpersonal skills, communication skills and educational media skills required for effective teaching. The Foundation Teaching Practice (FTP) programme occurs within the context of this module. During this programme, students micro-teach lessons in Religious Education and the elective subject (English, History or Music) to primary school pupils in simulated classroom environments. This is followed by video review of the taught micro-lessons with an assigned FTP tutor. Preparatory work on researching and planning these lessons takes place in advance of the FTP week, and the skills developed during this programme are essential for School Placement Programme 1 (SPP1).

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand educational theory and practice and in particular the interaction between their academic subjects and teaching.
2. Approach their work as learners and teachers in an independant yet collegial manner and in accord with the ethics of the teaching profession.
3. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge and understanding of pedagogical methods at primary level, with a focus on Religious Education and the Elective (English, History or Music).
4. Employ the learning and teaching skills they have acquired so as to operate in a professional and accountable manner with sensitivity to individual learners.
5. Plan, evaluate and implement a series of micro-lessons including a suitable body of resources in Religious Education and the Elective (English, History or Music) for particular class groups at primary level.
