Description

This module builds on the knowledge and skills gained by students in the previous two years through an engagement with the harmonic and contrapuntal vocabulary of the Baroque and Classical periods in theoretical and applied practical contexts. Additionally, the module develops students’ aural perception skills and facilitates further experience of appropriate technology resources, as well as providing demonstration and discussion of appropriate use of content and techniques in teaching and research.

Learning Outcomes

1. Develop an understanding and appreciation of harmony and counterpoint in the Baroque and Classical styles.
2. Acquire literacy, performance and compositional skills using the harmonic and contrapuntal resources of Baroque and Classical repertoire.
3. Display a knowledge of writing in an imitative style for keyboard
4. Present compositional exercises using appropriate notational software
5. Adapt the acquired compositional, technological and literacy skills to the contexts of teaching and research.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

This module builds on the harmonic vocabulary, language and techniques covered in Year 1 and 2. Harmony:
The writing of harmony in not more than four parts is further extended to the harmonization of chorales in the style of Bach, including the application of secondary seventh chords and their inversions; chromatic harmony; higher dominant discords.

Counterpoint:
Advanced imitative and invertible counterpoint: the construction of two-part inventions, imitative/cantus-firmus-based forms for keyboard such as chorale preludes and trio sonatas, using the harmonic resources outlined above; the construction of a fugal exposition in three parts: subjects; countersubjects; answers: real and tonal; Free parts and codettas
