Description

The purpose of this module is for the students to become familiar with setting up and managing network equipment and software as well as various servers used in modern enterprise computing environments.

Learning Outcomes

1. Use Virtualisation software to set up Virtual Machines.
2. Set up and configure servers (e.g. web servers,DHCP, DNS, SSH) on a virtual machine.
3. Install and configure dynamic routing software such as RIP on Linux machines.
4. Troubleshoot incorrectly configured routers, examine routing tables and analyse network traffic using traffic capture tools.
5. Implement Linux bridging and have an appreciation of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
6. Able to use iptables to perform packet filtering on a LAN and be able to identify network security issues.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Linux installation
Understand the various flavours of Linux available. Download and install Linux onto a virtual machine. configure various aspects of the networking and security Understand how to add packages, and to determine the most suitable for a given task.

Server setup
Understanding the different types of server Installation of server-related software on to a virtual machine Configuration of server software Set up of http, dns, dhcp, ssh, and understanding the role of each.

routing
Differences between static and dynamic routing. Installation of dynamic routing software

Trouble-shooting
Understand the things which can go wrong with routers learn to recognise when they occur Examine routing tables and understand the content. Analyse network traffic using traffic capture tools.

Linux Bridging
Understand what is meant by bridging. Introduction to the Spanning Tre Protocol. Implement Linux Bridging, and gain an appreciation for how the Spanning Tree Protocol works.

Security
Understand the attacks which can happen. Learn to recognise when they have occurred, and gain an appreciation of how to recover from them.
