Description Consolidating underlying theories of sustainability, citizenship and human rights, and applied professional geography, this module surveys concepts of memory space and place, representation, power, contested interpretations and values, and symbolic capital, at individual, community, national and larger scales. These ideas are explored within Irish and European contexts and scales beyond, as with symbolic sites and memorials associated with nationalism, wars, Holocausts, post-Soviet Europe and civil and ethnic conflicts. Symbolic spaces for victors of the state, and attempts now to include 'victims' and the once excluded voices such as women, minorities, and the 'others' are encompassed. Case study work includes famine, Ireland and diaspora; slavery and its heritages; South African post-apartheid experiences, totalitarianisms, and imperialsim and post-colonial cultures. Research in geographies and histories of memory is applied in many great areas including input into organizing commoration events, conflict resolution, and parity of esteem constructs, peace processes and heritage and tourist related-industries as is recognized by UN, EU, Council of Europe and Irish institutions. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Outcomes 1. Analyse how relationships between sustainability, citizenship, heritage, human rights, memory, space, place, representation, power and a symbolic capital, at individual, community, national and larger scales are interrelated 2. Understand, research and use sources and methodologies in political geography 3. Relate holistic geographical and political perspectives connecting official and non-official heritages, conflict resolution and many challenges due to processes of commodification of memory and symbolic places 4. Develop analyses from geographical perspectives enhancing mapping, written and digital presentation skills 5.
