Description

This module covers issues relevant to Personal Development Planning (PDP), such as developing skills and competencies. Specifically, it provides students with an understanding of the skills and abilities at both (i) an individual and (ii)group level that they will need in order to operate successfully during their time in university and in their future careers. Students are expected to attend lectures, engage in self-reflective exercises, prepare for and contribute to class discussions.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify challenges and opportunities available for graduates in the future
2. Identify the competencies required to work effectively as a member of a team
3. Think reflectively about themselves, their personal effectiveness and the situations in which they find themselves;
4. Understand and work to develop personal leadership and effectiveness skills such as communication, influencing, self management, relationship building and decision making
5. Proactively plan career goals and assess opportunities which may arise

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Introduction to Personal Development Planning
What is PDP? Why is PDP relevant for (i) your time at university, (ii) for your personal life, and (iii) for your future career?

Learning about specific skills
In this section students will learn about personal effectiveness skills and engage in self-reflective exercises relating to topics such as for example, self management, relationship building, influencing skills, negotiation skills, decision making and communication skills.

The vision - personal leadership
This section includes activities and structured reflection on a range of issues such as: What success really means for you; Looking at your own life and life story; Increasing motivation; identifying how you perform best and how you can improve your personal effectiveness skills.

Career planning and management
In this section students will, with support from DCU careers services, develop a career plan following completion of career profiling exercises. Students will be required to prepare their CV as part of their portfolio.
