Description

This module focuses on integrating the central tenets of second-level music-teaching: listening and responding, performing, and composing. The module equips learners with a thorough knowledge of musicteaching methodologies and practical classroom music-making skills. Key areas of focus are music-teaching strategies, performance leadership, sourcing and creating resources, differentiation, planning and curriculum development, assessment, and CPD. The module aims to provide student teachers with the necessary skills for creating teaching and learning environments that nurture and enhance post-primary pupils’ interaction with a wide variety of musical genres.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the appropriate professional skills necessary to enhance pupils’ music literacy, both in general terms and in relation to specific JC and LC requirements.
2. Utilise the appropriate professional skills necessary to guide pupils’ listening and response to music of various genres, styles and forms.
3. Understand, demonstrate, and evaluate a range of teaching methodologies for music at post-primary level.
4. Source, design and employ a range of resources (musical, text-based, AV, ICT) in order to nurture pupils’ abilities to understand, create and perform music.
5. Complete learning tasks purposefully with an awareness of learning styles and using the ability to work collaboratively with others.
6. Tailor classroom activities and resources to cater for the diverse needs and interests of pupils.
