Description

The purpose of this module is for students to consider and understand what is involved in researching a challenge or issue facing a company or a sector. The students draft a white paper based on a specific industrial sector or on a wider societal issue. The proposal will consist of title, aims and a thorough background review including literature survey on their chosen topic.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify a sector-wide research issue or challenge (e.g. technical, environmental, energy, supply chain, security, product safety, data protection, automation, competitiveness)
2. Critically review and extract relevant information from literature in the public domain
3. Critically review the issue or challenge with respect to societal impact, health & safety, risk assessments and ethics
4. Apply knowledge from other modules to propose technology or policy solutions to this issue or challenge
5. Consult with industrial partners or relevant stakeholders to identify sector-wide issues or challenges
6. Formulate a coherent written white paper including background, a relevant literature review and draft recommendations

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Analysis of the problem
Use of research and knowledge to break down the problem statement and analyse the challenge.

Literature survey/research
This survey should include recent journal publications in addition to text book and other sources. Must be properly referenced and form a significant section of the final report

Proposed solution
Development of a project plan to implement a reasoned engineering approach to complete the project

Documentation of outcomes
A coherent and relevant project project plan and literature review is required.
