Description

Retaining talent and systemically developing them to fill future positions in the organisation is extremely important for organisational functioning but remains a significant challenge. The purpose of this module is to provide students with a balanced theoretical and practical understanding of talent management activities in a range of organisational contexts. This module will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge required for talent recognition, management, retention and development. In this module, students will develop knowledge and skills to enable them to engage in a range of activities associated with talent management including the recruitment and selection of staff, the management and reward of performance and training and development. Students are expected to attend lectures, engage in group work and participate in class discussions.

Learning Outcomes

1. Evaluate key talent management concepts, theories and techniques.
2. Understand the talent management process including planning for talent, recruitment, acquiring talent, developing talent, managing talent and retaining talent.
3. Utilise appropriate skills to undertake a range of day to day talent management functions relating to recruitment, selection, managing performance and reward, succession planning, managing diversity, absenteeism and employee release from the organisation.
4. Evaluate the ethical and legal obligations associated with talent management.

Introduction to Talent Management
The context of talent management; talent management activities and goals; future developments in talent management

Talent Planning
The labour market in Ireland. Human Resource Planning process and links to strategic planning; assessing current human resource needs; strategies for effective planning.

Recruitment and Selection
Advertisements; selecting advertising media; the use of external agencies; methods of selection; application forms; psychological testing; assessment centres; evaluating selection decisions. Contracts of employment. Legal considerations. The induction process.

Performance Management
Performance management and performance appraisal.

Reward Management
The nature of reward strategies; links with human resource strategies; motivation theories underlying the design of reward systems; the design of systems. Fringe benefits. Performance-related-pay.

Developing Talent
Training and Development, Learning theories, Career Management

Ethics and Professionalism
Ethical framework for judging HR practices; professional considerations when managing human resources.
