Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the role of the children s nurse in relation to the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care to children with acute and chronic illness in a variety of health care settings. 2. Examine the pathophysiological processes in the child with acute and chronic illness and relate them to the delivery of nursing care. 3. Evaluate the role of the children s nurse in meeting the health promotion and education needs of the child and family with acute or chronic illness. 4. Explain the effects of acute and chronic illness on the child and family from a physical, social, psychological and emotional perspective. 5. Discuss the contribution of the multidisciplinary team in the care of children with acute and chronic illness. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Indicative Content and
Learning Activities The nature of disease and pathologyThe effect of disease and pathology on the normal functioning of the nervous and ENT systems will be explored. This will include the physiological, social and psychological aspects of childhood illness related to the nervous and ENT systems.Evidence based nursing interventionsNursing assessment strategies, care planning, care delivery techniques and evaluation of care provided to children and their families with a variety of nerological and ENT conditions will be examined.Pharmacological interventionsPrinciples of pharmacological interventions will be explored to include the mechanisms of action in relation to drugs most frequently used in the management of neurological and ENT conditions.Health education and promotionHealth education and promotion as applied to children with neurological and ENT conditions will be explored. The importance of optimising psychosocial wellbeing will be emphasised.Clinical SkillsRelevant clinical skills when caring for a child with neurological and ENT conditions.Child abuse and neglectTypes of child abuse will be explored to include sexual, physical and emotional abuse, non-accidenatal injury and the nature of social admissions to hospital. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
