Description The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the nursing care of children with a variety of common childhood illnesses. In this module the students will draw on previous theoretical knowledge and clinical experiences. They will acquire knowledge and skills based on current evidence based nursing practice to care for children with a variety of health care needs. Students are expected to attend lectures, practical demonstrations and contribute to tutorials. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Analyse the role of the children's nurse in relation to the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care to children with altered respiratory and neuorological function in community and healthcare settings. 2. Apply evidence based nursing care to children with altered respiratory and neurological function in community and healthcare settings. 3. Examine the rationale for the delivery of evidence based care to children with altered respiratory and neurological function in all healthcare settings. 4. Demonstrate a knowledge of collaborative working and decision making within an interdisciplinary team 5. Evaluate the role of the children's nurse in meeting the health promotion and education needs of children and their families in community and healthcare settings. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Indicative Content and
Learning Activities The nature of disease and pathological processThe effect of disease and pathology on the normal functioning of the respiratory and neurological systems will be explored. This will include the physiological, social and psychological aspects of illness.Anatomy and physiologyThis section revisits the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and neurological system. It focuses particularly on the each system as the child grows and develops.Evidenced based nursing interventionsNursing assessment strategies, care planning, delivery techniques and evaluation of care provided to children and their family with a variety of health care needs. The Paediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) will be incorporated.Pharmacological interventionsPrinciples of pharmacological interventions will be explored to include the mechanisms of action in relation to drugs used most frequently in management of respiratory and neurological disorders.CommunicationAge appropriate, cross cultural communication techniques and skills will be developed.Health education and promotionHealth promotion and health education as applied to children with altered respiratory and neurological function will be examined.Complementary and alternative therapiesThe uses and benefits of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of children with altered respiratory and neurological function will be considered. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
