Description The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to the nursing care of children with complex healthcare needs. In this module students will develop knowledge and skills based on current evidence based nursing practice to care for children with altered cardiac, metabolic and integumentary function. Students are expected to attend lectures, tutorials and engage in group work and directed study. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Analyse the role of the children's nurse in relation to the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care to children with complex healthcare needs in a variety of healthcare settings. 2. Apply evidence based nursing care to children with complex healthcare needs in the community and healthcare settings. 3. Examine the rationale for the delivery of evidence based care to children with a variety of complex healthcare needs in all healthcare settings. 4. Explore psychological and psychosocial issues that influence the management of care from a personal, professional and cultural practice perspective. 5. Indicative Content and
Learning Activities Anatomy and PhysiologyThis section revisits the anatomy and physiology of the skin and cardiac system. It focuses on developmental anatomy and physiology as applied to topics in this module. Normal metabolism will be reviewed.The nature of disease and pathologyThe effect of disease and pathology on the normal functioning of the the skin and cardiac system and on metabolism will be explored. This will include the physiological, social and psychological aspects of illness and disability.Evidence based nursing interventionsNursing assessment strategies, care planning, delivery techniques and evaluation of care provided to children and their families with a variety of complex healthcare needs will be examined.Pharmacological interventionsPrinciples of pharmacological interventions will be explored to include the mechanisms of action in relation to drugs most frequently used in the management of cardiac dysfunction, metabolic dysfunction and skin disorders.Health education and promotionHealth education and promotion as applied to children with complex healthcare needs will be explored. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
