Description

Year 2 semester 2 general physics laboratory for PAN classes involving least square fitting projects, a virtual experiment, and Arduino electronics project.

Learning Outcomes

1. Acquire and analyse simulated experimental data from a virtualised experiment
2. Concisely write a technical report on a virtualised experiment, computational projects, and an electronics project design and outcomes
3. Give brief oral presentation on project work
4. Describe relevant ethical issues in relation to plagiarism and adhere to University regulations concerning same.
5. Prepare joint reports and present teamwork to peers
6. Demonstrate engagement with relevant professional development skills development exercises in areas such as scientific writing, CV and interview skills etc.
7. Apply knowledge gained in lecture modules to the interpretation of experimental results

Workload Full-time hours per semester
Type Hours Description
Laboratory66Undertaking project work and virtual experiments
Independent Study35Background reading for design and implementation, as well as physics of least square fitting projects
Assessment Feedback24Demonstrate engagement with relevant professional development skills development exercises in areas such as writing for/communicating to different audiences, CV and interview skills etc. The exact range of activities depend on the developments within the transversal skills part of the HCI project

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Group computational project work
Students will also take one project based task on least-square fitting of measured data, to learn about errors of fitting models and how to appropriately estimate them.

Virtual lab
Students will perform a virtualised online experiment and deliver an experimental report on the findings of the experiment

Electronic Project
Students will plan an build an Arduino based electronics project to capture digitally record physical phenomena
