Description

The objective of this module is to allow students develop their communicative competence through an array of tasks that relate to meaning in context through L1 and L2. Students will explore L1 and L2 meaning through formal structures and the similarities and the differences across them. The proposed intra- and interlinguistic activities are typically focused on the different possibilities of communication and translation. Students will work on: grammar, vocabulary, syntax, pragmatics and translation-related concepts like binary/non-binary mistakes. The module aims to provide the students with an opportunity to engage with how language and communication interact in a meaningful way and prepare them to acquire a basis for general translation practice.

1. Analyse and describe nuances that affect meaning in L1 and L2.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of transferring meaning across L1 and L2.
3. Translate a variety of short texts into L1 and L2 using different resources.
4. Identify and provide solutions to translation difficulties in an adequate manner, and applying creative solutions if necessary.
5. Reflect on theoretical and applied aspects on language, linguistics, and translation.
6. Demonstrate sustained engagement in projects based on collaborative translation through practice.

Independent Study48Students will have to dedicate 2 extra hours every week during the semester to prepare for the following class.
Tutorial16Students will avail of time to discuss with the lecturer any matters or difficulties they may have.
Independent Study50Students will need to work autonomously beyond the class preparation in order to make progress and to allow the cohort to work in a timely manner.
Assignment Completion50Students are required to devote time to prepare and complete the continuous assessment. Students may also be required to submit assignments for correction throughout the semester. Such assignments are intended to prepare the students for the assessment. Assignments submitted outside the time/date agreed will not be accepted.
Group work12There will be interactive group sessions among students along the semester.
Directed learning50The lecturer will provide the students on a weekly basis with explanatory videos, presentations, reports, webpages and documentaries that they will have to prepare in a timely manner.

Communication: Language and translation This module integrates language learning, translation and communication. Students will learn to construct meaning across the source and the target language in order to establish correspondent meaning(s) taking into account the social and the individual dimensions in the use of language. Some of the tasks include: analysing translation strategies and translation mistakes; developing their translation skills as a problem solving activity; translate from the L2 to the L1; translate from the L1 to the L2; reverse translation; practice sight translation; practice creativity in translation. An array of authentic materials used in this module include audiovisual, literary, and journalistic elements.
