Description

This module chronicles the economic, social and cultural history of the independent Irish state and Northern Ireland in the twentieth century.

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss the manner in which the Free State was established and consolidated in the period up to 1949 with particular reference to the development of party politics in the period
2. Analyze the changing political, social and economic landscape of the Irish State in the period after the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in 1949
3. Evaluate the role of religion and the Churches in Irish society after 1922
4. Examine the main social, economic and political developments in the Northern Irish State in the period 1920-1997
5. Analyze developments in Irish popular culture in the five decades after independence
6. Discuss the importance of class and gender in a study of Irish society in the period
7. Interpret developments within the Irish State in context of international politics and developments
