Description This module introduces students to the practice of translating semi-specialised scientific and technical texts at an advanced level. It helps students to build source language and target language proficiency. It is also designed to help students to use terminological and domain-specific knowledge appropriately, follow a translation brief suitably, and become aware of the demands and considerations of submitting professional translation assignments. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Recognise source language expressions and locate equivalent target language expressions in semi-specialised domains of scientific and technical knowledge 2. Employ terminological and domain knowledge that is suitable for use in semi-specialised scientific and technical texts and in a particular translation assignment 3. Select a translation strategy that is appropriate to the purpose of the text, the translation brief, or other contextual factors in a translation assignment 4. Critique the quality of and strategies employed in existing translations 5. Produce a translation in the target language of a semi-specialised, scientific or technical text in the source language that takes into consideration text cohesion and text presentation (typing, spelling, grammar, etc.) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Activities Indicative ContentPractical translation examples; Translation theory and practice; The importance of background research; Translation quality assessment in practice; Translating scientific/technical information for special users (e.g., children); Domain-specific knowledge (concerning, e.g., atomic science, DNA, earth sciences, medical devices, patent translation, earthquake technology, fibre optics, etc.).Indicative Learning ActivitiesCompleting short quizzes, cloze tests, or glossary-matching exercises; Building and maintaining a bilingual glossary of specialised language; Reading in Japanese and English about specialised translation and the work of specialised translators in theory and in practice; Comparing published target texts with published source texts or comparing different machine translation outputs and critiquing the comparisons; Producing a number of translations in line with specific translation briefs; Maintaining a reflective log to consider translation choices made and translation competences encountered in the module. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
