Description The Healthcare Interpreting Practice micro-credentials course gives interpreters and people who would like to work as interpreters in the future the opportunity to learn how to interpret, to practice in groups, to learn about notetaking techniques, and to prepare for work as a healthcare interpreter. This micro-credentials module fills a gap in the market. There is currently no accredited University course in Ireland for spoken language interpreters who wish to develop their skills. The HSE currently funds healthcare interpreting to some extent. However, in order to comply with public bodies' Statutory Duty to Eliminate Discrimination, Promote Equality, and Protect Human Rights of Staff and Service Users (section 42 of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Act 2014), a substantial increase in interpreter provision is expected in the near future. It is expected that this will result in more work for interpreters in healthcare settings. This micro-credentials module is aimed at people who are currently working as healthcare interpreters, e.g. for Ukrainian beneficiaries of temporary protection, as interpreters in other settings, and those who are interested in working in this area in the future. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Interpret information accurately and completely 2. Draw on a range of memory training techniques to improve recall in bilateral and consecutive interpreting modes 3. Implement consecutive notetaking techniques to aid their memory 4. Demonstrate awareness of ethical issues that arise in healthcare interpreting scenarios 5. Ways to improve short term memory.Notetaking for consecutive interpretingA special approach is used for notetaking in consecutive interpreting. Notes are an important skill employed by professional interpreters.Interpreting PracticeOpportunity to practise interpreting each week and to obtain peer feedback.Glossary preparationStudents will be provided with glossaries in English of terms that will be used in interpreting practice role-plays. Students will be asked to prepare the glossaries in their foreign language before class.Discussion and reflectionGroup discussion and reflection on issues that arise during interpreting practice.
