Description

This module consolidates and develops further the understanding, reading, speaking and writing skills developed in GE323 and preceding modules. The modules also focuses on cultural competence and research skills. New grammatical features are also introduced. Students will engage with German language materials that deal with a selection of contemporary issues including nachhaltiger Konsum, Natur in der Stadt and Ehrenamt. The module aims at an upper intermediate level of fluency and accuracy. Students should attend all sessions and participate fully in learning activities throughout the semester.

Learning Outcomes

1. Follow the main points of oral reports, written texts and multi-modal texts on a selection of topical issues.
2. Source and synthesise useful information relating to these topical issues from a number of appropriate German language resources
3. Demonstrate sufficient language competence to be able to produce clear descriptions, viewpoints and arguments in well-structured texts and presentations on topics of current interest, showing controlled use of a variety of grammatical features and topic-specific vocabulary
4. Demonstrate reflective and critical thinking on the topics covered throughout the module and related topics
5. Make effective use of a variety of resources and digital tools for the purpose of language learning.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Students will engage in a variety of activities and tasks relating to understanding, reading, speaking and writing German. Some will be undertaken individually, others in groups. Students will engage with specific aspects of contemporary German culture and language (including grammar) as they relate to the themes selected for this module. Students are expected to engage consistently with class-related activities, directed learning and independent study over the course of the semester and to avail of language-learning opportunities outside of class and assignments.
