Description

In this module, students begin musicological studies with a variety of topics from the following: Western Art Music, Irish Traditional Music, Popular Music, Film Music; additionally, they are engaged in various forms of group music making.

Learning Outcomes

1. show an understanding of musical topics from covering a broad range of styles
2. analyse and appraise representative works from various periods of Art Music.
3. analyse and appraise genres/practices of Irish traditional music or popular music in cultural and historical contexts
4. apply musicological information and analytical skills in researching and communicating informed assessments of music across a range of stylistic and socio-historical contexts.
5. listen and engage with music with greater awareness, illustrate its inherent patterns, and read and critique relevant texts relating to its study, practice and reception.
6. assess the charecteristics of different styles and generes and have a knowledge of their cultural and historical backgrounds
7. develop competence in, and musical understanding of ensemble performance
8. gain practical experience in the organisation of concerts, broadcasts, recordings and other performance-related activities
