Description
This module will introduce students to the architecture and workings of the world wide web, and to the principles of designing a usable website. It will address the technical structure of the WWW and practical aspects of web authoring as well as the design of websites. It will also introduce the tools and techniques for constructing, optimising and maintaining websites. It will address design issues including requirements specification, user experience and design principles, usability guidelines, developing and deploying marketing and e-commerce websites and mobile apps.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the structure and operation of brochure websites and ecommerce websites. 2. Explain the governing principles of Web usability, design guidelines and user experience. 3. Specify, document and wireframe user requirements for websites 4. Critically appraise and test the usability of websites 5. Develop a brochure website using industry recognised content management systems (CMS) 6. Develop an e-commerce website using industry-recognises content management systems 7. Understand ecommerce effectiveness principles and the workings and design of online payment gateways.

Assignment | Each student must design, develop and deploy a responsive brochureware website for themselves or a client using WordPress.com. The assignment comprises of (a)Requirements Specification Document incl. wireframes, user experience requirements etc, (b) a deployed Website and (c) and expert review of final website. The website should demonstrate skills and capabilities in web design and development from a technical, authorship and marketing perspective. | 60% | | Group assignment | Each student will be assigned to a team and client. They must design, develop and deploy an e-commerce website for the client using WordPress.org.
