Description
This module will introduce students to the architecture and workings of the world wide web, and to the principles of designing a usable website. It will address the technical structure of the WWW and practical aspects of web authoring as well as the design of websites. It will also introduce the tools and techniques for constructing, optimising and maintaining websites. It will address design issues including requirements specification, user experience and design principles, and usability guidelines for the development and deployment of marketing and e-commerce websites for the global consumer.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the structure and operation of brochure websites and ecommerce websites. 2. Explain the governing principles of Web usability, design guidelines and user experience. 3. Specify, document and wireframe user requirements for websites 4. Critically appraise and test the usability of websites and applications 5. Develop a brochure website using relevant internationally- and industry-recognised web technologies. 6. Develop an e-commerce website using internationally- and industry-recognised content management systems. 7. Understand ecommerce effectiveness principles and the workings and design of online payment gateways.

| Group assignment | Student must design, develop, deploy and demonstrate a responsive brochureware website for a fictional international company or brand using HTML, CSS and multimedia components as required. The assignment comprises of (a) Requirements and wireframes (b) a deployed website and (c) and demonstration of the final website. Students will be asked to critically apply a specific usability heuristics framework to assess the usability of a website or software application.
