Module Title Bioprocess Engineering Principles
Module Code BTE1005 (ITS: BE224)
Faculty Biotechnology School Science & Health
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 5
Description

This module gives the students an introduction to the basic principles of bioprocess engineering with particular emphasis on developing problem solving skills, particularly basic computational skills and the ability to carry out mass and energy balances in reacting and non-reacting systems.

Learning Outcomes

1. Carry out simple algebraic, numerical and calculus-based calculations relevant to bioprocess engineering.
2. Perform simple calculations using the laws of thermodynamics, the ideal gas equation and the principle of chemical equilibrium.
3. Formulate and solve mass and energy balances for reacting and non-reacting bioprocess systems.

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
