Current Academic Year 2025 - 2026

Module Title Introduction to Proteomics & Mass Spectrometry
Module Code BTE1027 (ITS: BE532)
Faculty Biotechnology School Science & Health
NFQ level 9 Credit Rating 2.5
Description

The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to the technology currently available to analyse global patterns of gene expression at the protein level. The module will addresss applications of this technology to reveal gene regulation events involved in disease progression as well as potential targets for drug discovery and diagnostics. The module will cover the following aspects of proteomic technologies and research; • Sample preparation from various biological materials (e.g. cell lines, tissue, serum, plasma, etc.) • 2D Gel Electrophoresis, including 2D Difference Gel Electrophoresis (2D DIGE) • Mass Spectrometry (MS) for protein identification and characteristion • Quantitative LC-MS proteomic technologies o SILAC o iTRAQ o Label-free • Introduction to bioinformatics tools for proteomics

Learning Outcomes

1. Select the most appropriate method of sample preparation for various biological materials.
2. 1D761A4D-27FE-0001-61FB-CE9E11F5131D

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
