Module Title Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory
Module Code CHM1018 (ITS: CS254)
Faculty Science & Health School Chemical Sciences
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 5
Description

The purpose of this module is the development of observational and manipulative skills through experimental procedures which combine a wide range of classical, synthetic and spectroscopic techniques by augmenting and reinforcing the understanding and knowledge of various aspects of the 2nd year Inorganic lecture course.

Learning Outcomes

1. Perform basic synthetic chemical and analytical laboratory experiments.
2. Use a range of chemistry, spectroscopic and analytical instrumentation
3. Write comprehensive laboratory reports discussing the experimental results.
4. Illustrate and comprehend the chemical reactions arising in each chemistry experiment.
5. Examine the theory behind each experiment and how it relates to each step of the experiment.
6. Gain familiarity and expertise of the Mercury program using crystal structures from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD).

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
