Description This module aims to help students to acquire Chinese language proficiency and to further develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as independent learning skills. The module also aims to develop students' communicative competence, which will help them to engage in academic activities during their Year 3 study abroad in China. Students are expected to master 1,200 common Chinese characters related to society, daily life, the workplace and campus life. Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and leisure contexts, including short narratives. (DACS: Demonstrate appropriate listening skills to enhance communication.) 2. Initiate, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. (DACS: Communicate effectively in oral formats, adapting to audience profile as required.) 3. Give or seek personal views and opinions when discussing topics of interest in interactions with others. (DACS: Demonstrate awareness of one’s communication abilities, including areas for development.) 4. Produce writing compositions on everyday topics using Chinese characters. 5. Find and understand relevant information in everyday materials, such as letters, brochures and short official documents. 6. Understand essential aspects of Chinese culture, including interpersonal relations and basic value systems. (DACS: Demonstrate how to adapt communication styles in order to effectively interact with people from different cultures.) 7. Use IT skills: 1) word processing, 2) web-search and 3) accessing language specific resources. Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading Skills A variety of authentic texts on different topics will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Consolidation of characters and words acquired previously and acquisition of additional new characters and words. Listening Skills A variety of authentic conversations of more formal registers of spoken Chinese will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class. Writing Skills Students will write writing compositions, creative and more formal, on given topics and current affairs. They will develop their range and active application of more advanced grammatical structures. Speaking skills Students will actively participate in simple discussions in class.
