Description The purpose of this module is to help students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Chinese through diverse topics. It also helps students to develop further understanding of Chinese culture and society in a global context. Learning Outcomes 1. Express ideas clearly in Chinese using complex grammatical structures and an appropriate register. (Communicate effectively in oral formats, adapting to audience profile as required.) 2. Extract information from a variety of paper-based and online sources. 3. Demonstrate the ability to interact with native speakers in a relatively comfortable and participatory manner. 4. Express personal opinions in writing using an appropriate register and style. (Communicate effectively in written or other non-oral formats, adapting to the audience profile as required.) 5. Demonstrate awareness of Chinese culture and significant social, economic and cultural issues and events. 6. Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Synchronous lectures and tutorials Students attend synchronous lectures and tutorials that introduce and develop key language points, vocabulary and communicative skills related to the topics covered in the module. Sessions include a range of interactive learning activities such as guided language practice, group discussions, debates, role-play and quizzes. These activities provide opportunities for students to practise listening, speaking, reading and writing in Chinese and to apply their language knowledge in communicative and intercultural contexts. Independent learning Students undertake structured and supported independent learning activities. These include preparing new learning content in advance, reviewing language points covered in synchronous classes, completing homework and assignments and engaging with regular Loop quizzes and online exercises.
