Description

This module gives students a firm grounding in the translation of economic/commercial texts from French into English at an advanced level. It addresses the techniques and resources that are of particular value in economic/commercial translation, and exposes students to the text types that are frequently encountered in these domains, thus preparing them to take on professional translation assignments. It will enhance students’ autonomy in sourcing appropriate background documentation enabling students to deal competently with issues of equivalence and difference

Learning Outcomes

1. Use advanced strategies in the translation from French into English of a variety of text types within the domains of economics and commerce
2. Create native-speaker, domain-specialist level target language texts, which are fluent and accurate translations of the source text
3. Work under pressure of time to create advanced translations using a computer and an array of online and hard-copy resources
4. Locate, critically evaluate and utilise relevant terminological resources

Lecture24Students translate a variety of economic texts into English. They discuss issues with classmates. Group feedback is provided regularly and individual feedback also available.
Independent Study101Preparation and translation of texts as per Loop. Translations should usually be completed prior to participation in class, and difficult issues should be noted for class/group discussion. Students discuss terminology and translation issues on Loop forums.
