Description

Semester Abroad Coordinators for the BEDLAN Semester Abroad 2022: French: Ms. Julie Moyne. Spanish: Dr. Inmaculada Gómez Soler. German-speaking: Dr. Olga Springer Semester 2 of Year 3 of the BEDLAN programme provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the relevant target language and culture. Students attend Partner Universities in Austria, Germany, France or Spain for one academic semester. The selected modules are compatible with the student’s chosen Language Pathway. Modules can be drawn from the wide range of modules offered in partner universities (excluding modules delivered/assessed in English) and are selected within certain established criteria. Modules focusing on the Target Language are delivered and assessed through that language. Module choices and the student’s overall number of hours/ credits are approved by the Year Abroad Coordinator and recorded in a Learning Agreement. This module carries 20 credits. The remaining 5 credits required in Semester 2 of Year 3 are provided by an online module delivered by Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge during Semester 2.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate substantial progress in their use and understanding of the target language and increased confidence as an advanced student of that language.
2. Recognise, explain and use effectively a broad variety of linguistic features in a range of different contexts.
3. Demonstrate an increased understanding of the target culture; its history, literature and politics.
4. Demonstrate a complex understanding of intercultural issues as they relate to familiar cultures and the target culture.
5. Articulate responses to intercultural and linguistic issues as they relate to familiar cultures and the target culture and ground these in both experience and theory.
6. Describe and compare additional perspectives on Language Studies/(Inter-)Cultural Studies or other relevant disciplines.
