Description
The purpose of this module is to build on skills learned in INVSK1, designed to give instrumentalists and vocalists a strong technique on their respective instruments. Areas covered, depending on instrument, may include, but not be limited to: scalar tasks, swing idiom vocabulary, rhythmic consistency and idiomatic depth, sound considerations and the ability to construct a solo over a set of moving chords.

Learning Outcomes
1. Perform competently on their instrument or voice 2. Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate technical and style considerations for the swing idiom 3. Show comfort in dealing with melodic soloing repertoire typical of the swing idiom 4. Display an awareness of the idiomatic phrasing, both rhythmic and harmonic, of the jazz tradition 5. Demonstrate comfort in a jazz improvisation milieu in the professional music sphere

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Specific techniques relevant to the technical performance practice of voice/instrument Each learner will work on a series of specific techniques, all of which will be relevant to the technical performance practice of their voice/instrument. Depending on instrument, these may include, but not be limited to, scalar tasks, swing idiom vocabulary, rhythmic consistency and idiomatic depth, sound considerations and the ability to construct a solo over a set of moving chords. Techniques discussed, depending on instrument, may include - Tone control - Scalar knowledge - Appropriate fingering - Breath control - Drum rudiments - Intonation - Idiomatic considerations - Developing voice-leading skills - Substitute chords and their use in improvisation - Vocabulary development in swing idiom - Stylistic authenticity within various contemporary genres such as swing, funk, Afro-Cuban or Brazilian music
