Description
This module is a micro-credential that will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to manage the care of individuals with dementia and their family/carers. The module has been designed in partnership with the National Dementia Office to address the educational needs of healthcare staff highlighted in the National Dementia Strategy. It covers the spectrum of dementia from prevention to the palliative end of the dementia journey and is relevant to those working in the community, acute care and long term care. Student must be in regular contact with people with dementia and their families/carers. This micro credential is an excellent springboard for further studies such as a masters in Nursing or to become a dementia champion in your organisation. This course offers a blended learning experience with three full days in DCU during 12 weeks of on-line education. We use the modern on-line learning techniques including interactive video simulation, discussion forums and quizzes.

Learning Outcomes
1. Evaluate a number of theoretical approaches to dementia and their implications on practice. 2. Evaluate the role of Irish agencies in the provision of dementia services to individuals / families / carers. 3. Complete a comprehensive assessment of an individiual with dementia. 4. Examine the relationship of people with dementia to their family, health professionals and social care workers. 5. Evaluate psycho-social interventions that promote well-being in people with dementia and their carers across the spectrum od dementia from mild to advanced stages. 6. Analyse the students role in promoting a sense of personhood in people with dementia.

| Professional Portfolio | Evidence of learning in the form of a learning portfolio. The portfolio covers a variety of prescribed evidence that student need to relate to their own practice through reflective and collaborative exercises. There are six sections which address the learning outcomes 1-6. | 30% | n/a | | Project | Change Project: The student will write a report on a small scale practical project they have completed in their place of work. The change must improve the care of (at least) one person with dementia towards a more person centred approach. Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.
* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
