Current Academic Year 2025 - 2026

Module Title Integrated Sport & Exercise Physiology
Module Code PHS1005 (ITS: SS203)
Faculty Health & Human Performance School Science & Health
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 10
Description

This module focuses on the integration and application of physiological concepts and theory covered in previous modules and based on wider reading. This integration and application is achieved through laboratory practical sessions encompassing data collection, analysis, interpretation and report writing, alongside lecture content exploring integrative aspects of acute exercise, exercise adaptations, and environmental and molecular exercise physiology. The practical sessions may include assessment of handgrip strength, maximal oxygen uptake, peak power output, isokinetic strength, hydration assessment, and glycemic response.

Learning Outcomes

1. integrate physiological concepts from previous modules in order to explain responses to exercise and nutrition stimuli
2. recognise the differences between different populations (strength/endurance, trained/untrained) as identified by physiological assessment
3. explain these differences in terms of the mechanisms of physiological adaptation and/or nutrition status
4. collect, analyse, interpret and report data relevant to practice in sport and exercise physiology

Reassessment Requirement Type
Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
