Description

Module Aims: This module aims to teach the student: How to create and maintain clinical records. How to use the principles and techniques of logic and problem solving techniques in history taking and clinical assessment of injuries. The principles and techniques of clinical assessment of spine and upper limb injuries with a view to making an accurate diagnosis.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe and apply the principles and techniques of creating and maintaining clinical records
2. Use principles of logic and problem solving in clinically examining a patient with an injury of the spine or upper limb
3. Clinically examine the spine and upper limb
4. Describe the typical mechanisms, signs and symptoms of upper limb and spinal injuries

AssignmentThe students will be provided with two case studies, an upper limb injury and a spine injury. The students will submit a piece of academic writing discussing the differential diagnosis, risk factors, epidemiology and initial treatment plan relating to the case studies.40%Week 27

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment

Functional anatomy of the upper limb and spine

The assessment (consultation, history taking and clinical examination) of upper limb and spinal injuries
Spinal, sacroiliac joint, shoulder girdle, elbow, wrist, hand and nerve injuries of the upper limb related to sporting and physical activity
