Module Aims
To introduce the concepts that underpin nursing care in various contexts. To develop an appreciation of patient/client perceptions of nursing care.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes (Shared): On completion of this module, and following a period of personal study, students will be able to: Discuss the concept of care and caring. Discuss the concept of need and vulnerability as it relates to people in the care of nurses. Discuss the cultural aspects of care delivery. Explore the concepts of pain Discuss concepts of health and illness Outline the major determinants of health Describe the main categories of physical illness, menatal illness and intellectual disability Discuss the impact of illness-physical and mental-on the individual and their family Outline the role of the nurse in the General, Mental Health and Intellectual Disability settings(s) Discuss the role of the nurse in caring for the dying patient Describe approaches to health promotion

Indicative Syllabus
·Nursing concepts- care, caring and holism .The different settings in which care is available ·The concept of vulnerability as it relates to people in nursing care ·The concept of pain ·Introduction to death and dying .Overview of perspectives on health, illness and disability ·Introduction to cultural aspects of health and illness ·Classification and different categories of physical illness, mental illness and intellectual disability. ·Service provision for clients with intellectual disability ·The rights of the person with intellectual disability. ·Relationship between nurses, clients and carers ·Labels/stereotype and stigma ·Mental health care and treatment ·Impact of physical illness, mental illness and intellectual disability on the client, the family and the community ·Introduction to health promotion. Branch-specific seminars will provide students with an opportunity to explore aspects of this module that relate specifically to their branch of nursing.
