Module Aims
To enable students to reflect more deeply on the complexity of the human experiences of health, sickness, disability and death through studying the expression of these experiences in the arts and humanities. To encourage students to explore the nature of nursing and caring and discover more creative, imaginative approaches to nursing roles and patient care.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to: Use a range of interpretative approaches to reflect on people's experiences of health. Illness and caring. Through study of arts and media, discuss how contextual and cultural factors influence people's perceptions and articulation of health, illness and caring. Demonstrate greater sensitivity to the lived experiences of people in relation to health and illness. Discuss the portrayal of nursing in the arts and media and reflect on the nature of nursing. Reflect on the nature, experience and complexities of caring from recipient and care-giver accounts. Identify and use arts and humanities for personal creativity/ fulfilment and considered approaches to patient care.

The use and usefulness of humanities in nursing. Interpretative approaches and their relationship to nursing. Health and illness in the humanities - contexts and cultures. Concepts and meanings of health and illness in relation to: Gender, Culture, Age, Health and illness in the humanities - lived experiences. Exploration of the following themes/ experiences as represented in the humanities: Disintegration,Being a patient,Being in pain, Being excluded,Living with handicap/disability, Experiencing beauty,Experiencing hope/hopelessness,Living on the margins, Experiencing meaning/ meaninglessnessBeing afraid, Feeling in control/ powerlessness Recovery,Living with long-term illness,Feeling violated, Grieving, loss and dying,Experiencing caring,Experiencing the body. Nursing and caring in the humanities Historical and modern portrayal of nurses and nursing roles. Nursing as an art. Creative/ artistic expression in nurses. Caring The experience of caring. Roles of care-givers - complexities and ethical issues. Using the humanities in caring practice.
