Module Aims
7 This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the physics topics of mechanics and matter and waves, directed towards general science students. 7 The subjects taught and the method of approach will be chosen to give students a full and thorough knowledge of the topics. In particular, emphasis will be placed on the relationship of the classroom material to the practical experiments undertaken by the students in module PS153. 7 The modules aims to develop student knowledge and appreciation of general physics and to be able to confidently handle problems, using non-calculus-based methods.

Learning Outcomes
7 The student should gain familiarity with reasonably advanced concepts in mechanics and matter and waves. 7 The student should be able to confidently tackle problems in these areas and apply the knowledge gained to the physics laboratory aspect of their course. 7 The student should be aware of the relevance of the topics studied to their field(s) of specialisation. 7 This awareness will focus on the possible sources of confusion for students with certain topics which are more conceptually demanding or abstract than normal. The module will be structured to address these issues, giving the students a good background and understanding of these topics.

Mechanics: ¿ Units and SI system ¿ Vector-based approach to linear dynamics ¿ Free body diagrams ¿ Rotational dynamics, moment of inertia, angular momentum ¿ Momentum and impulses for linear and angular momentum ¿ Work and energy ¿ Fluid dynamics Matter and Waves: ¿ Elasticity in solids, viscousity and surface tension in fluids ¿ Periodic motion, simple harmonic, damped and driven systems ¿ Mechanical waves, wave equation, harmonic waves, longitudinal and transverse waves ¿ Sound waves ¿ Wave superposition and interference, standing waves and normal modes ¿ Introduction to Fourier concepts ¿ Sound, intensity, beats, Doppler effect, musical tones and acoustics
