Module Aims
|
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the financial markets and institutions.
|
Learning Outcomes
|
This course will approach the study of financial markets and institutions from a range of different perspectives ranging from corporate decision making through bank treasury operations and portfolio management to public policy decision. Students will learn to accommodate a diversity of views in the uses of the markets and institutions. Students will be familiarised with the existence of computerised information systems relevant to the field, as well as being required to collect, collate and analyse data on a regular basis.

Indicative Syllabus
|
Foreign Exchange Markets: Introduction to the foreign exchange market, forwards swaps and interest parity, foreign currency futures and options.
Domestic and international Equity Markets: Stock exchanges, dealing systems, settlement, new issues, rights and scrip issues, secondary markets.
The Money and Bond Markets: Domestic money markets, call money, the interbank market, money market securities, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and bills of exchange, domestic bond markets.
The Eurocurrency Markets: Eurobanking and eurocurrency centres, deposit dealing and the term structure of eurocurrency rates, syndicated eurocredits.
International Bond Markets: Introduction to the international bond markets, new issue procedures in the Eurobond market, eurobond valuation and hedging, pricing options features in international bonds.
