Module Aims
To introduce the concepts that underpin nursing care in various contexts.To develop an appreciation of patient/client perceptions of nursing care.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, and following a period of personal study, students will be able to:
•Discuss key nursing concepts
•Discuss concepts of health and illness
•Outline the major determinants of health
•Describe approaches to health promotion
•Describe the stages of the nursing process
•Outline the common features of nursing models
•Discuss the nurse’s role in caring for the dying patient

Mental Health Nursing
•Classification of mental illness
•Impact of mental illness
•Role of mental health nurse
•Accounts of people with experience of receiving care in the psychiatric system.
• Needs & rights of those who receive mental health care
• Nursing theory & mental health nursing
•Individual mental health promotion strategies

Intellectual Disability Nursing
•Attitudes and terminology, labelling, philosophy of care
•Normalisation, social role valorisation, O’ Brien’s valued experiences
•Classification of intellectual disability
•Demographic trends and aetiology of Intellectual disability National Intellectual Disability Database
•Views and experiences of people with intellectual disability and their carers
•Human rights, civil rights, disability legislation, Advocacy
•Experiential work relating to how we view people in care

General Nursing
•Classification and different categories of physical illness.
•Different settings in the acute care sector.
•Impact of physical illness on the client, the family and the community.
•Nursing frameworks commonly used in general nursing

•Classification and different categories of  physical illness in children
•Different settings in the acute care sector
•Impact of physical illness on the adult, child, family and community
