Module Aims

The module will enable students to
•Explore the concept of health promotion as a mechanism of social change for individuals and communities.
•Develop the appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skills to identify, plan, implement and evaluate health promotion interventions for individuals and communities in a variety of settings.



Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to:
•Critically analyse the concepts of health and health promotion
•Demonstrate a knowledge of the key principles of health promotion which are also nursing skills e.g. advocacy, empowerment, enablement, mediation, collaboration/partnership, promotion of community action
•Demonstrate knowledge of policy development in health promotion from a national and international perspective
•Critically evaluate the various health promotion models and approaches
•Demonstrate an appreciation of the application of the “Settings” approach to different contexts
•Evaluate and critically analyse the role of the nurse in meeting the health promotion needs of the client group that they represent
