Module Aims
7 To provide an appreciation of joint procedures. 7 To develop an understanding of collective bargaining. 7 To introduce the student to other bargaining forms.

Learning Outcomes
7 Students will carry out research into a practical operational area of Industrial Relations. 7 Exercises and role plays in this course will contribute to developing student skills in creating and operating procedural agreements, negotiating and thinking on one's feet, together with an appreciation of union/management agreements.

Indicative Syllabus
Joint Procedures Framework: definition; advantages; formality; procedural agreements: union recognition, negotiation/dispute, grievance, discipline, redundancy. Practical Collective Bargaining: definition; levels of collective bargaining; subject matter for collective bargaining and agreements (substantive and procedural); history of collective bargaining; the negotiating process; collective bargaining conventions; six stages of negotiating. Collective Bargaining - further aspects: more definitions; limitations; collective bargaining theories; collective agreements: features, contents, additional aspects; legal and ethical issues; conciliation; mediation; arbitration. Centralised Bargaining: introduction; early national agreements; national wage agreements/understandings: history, main features, conflict avoidance, analysis; Programme for National Recovery (PNR) Programme for Economic and Social Progress (PESP); Programme for Competitiveness and Work (PCW). Productivity Bargaining: introduction; definitions/differences; history; main features; participants: employer, employee, trade unions; conclusions.
