Pre-requisite None
Co-requisite None
Module Aims
  • To develop an understanding of the compound types in organometallic chemistry.
  • To appreciate the nature of the bonding interactions in organometallic compounds and what factors influence their stability.
  • To outline common mechanistic aspects of reactions and catalytic cycles involving organometallic compounds.
  • To introduce the basic principles of surface chemistry and to distinguish between different types of interfaces.
  • To develop an understanding of polymer materials in terms of their preparation and physical properties.

Learning Outcomes

The students should be able to:

  • Predict the stability of organometallic compounds.
  • To suggest plausible mechanisms of catalytic cycles based on organometallic compounds.
  • Know reaction types for organometallic compounds.
  • To determine and apply adsorption isotherms.
  • To design a theoretical heterogeneous surface for a particular catalytic process.
  • To apply surface treatment to industrial processes including catalysis, detergency, wetting and colloidal systems.
  • To link knowledge of polymer characterisation to properties of particular polymers.
