To provide the student with a thorough understanding of deterministic signals and the digital systems used to process them.

On successful completion of this course, the student will:
- have a working knowledge of digital signals and their properties;
- have a working knowledge of digital signal processing systems;
- be able to design and evaluate the performance of digital filters;
- be able to implement digital filters and apply them to process real-time signals.

Indicative Syllabus | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Analysis and design of FIR filters: linear phase properties; Fourier design method; windowing; frequency sampling design. Analysis and design of IIR filters: matched-z, impulse invariant and bilinear transforms; conversion from low-pass prototype to high-pass, band-pass and band-stop filters. Finite word length effects: roundoff noise; overflow and scaling; limit cycle oscillations; coefficient quantisation. DSP system implementation: range of realisations from all-hardware to all-software; specialised architecture for signal processing; implementing algorithms on programmable Digital Signal Processors; total system implementation. Applications of DSP focussing on speech signals: modelling, coding, synthesis and recognition. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
