Indicative Syllabus
VECTORS: Vectors in the plane and in space; Vector addition and scalar multiplication. Inner products and their meaning. GEOMETRY OF PLANES AND LINES; n-component vectors; linear independence and bases; The Gram-Schmidt orthogonalisation process. Matrices: Operations on matrices - addition, subtraction, multiplication, transpose; rank of a matrix and determinants. Gauss-Jordan eliminaton. Inverse matrices. Special types of matrix : Diagonal, Triangular, Symmetric. EIGENVALUES: Definition and examples; Characteristic polynomial; Multiplicity; Diagonalisation of symmetric matrices;
