On successful completion of the module and following a period of personal study students will be able to:
7Critically discuss the biological basis of cancer (including explanations of carcinogenesis, neoplastic classification systems, cell cycle properties the metastatic process, hereditary and genetic issues)
7Evaluate the use of appropriate terminology and classification
7Critically evaluate psychological and sociological perspectives in caring for people with cancer and the implications for nursing practice
7Critically review health and social policy, including implementation strategies, in respect of cancer services
7Critically analyse statutory and voluntary service provision for people with cancer, from macro-level health/social policy influences through to the local point of patient contact
7Critically analyse the appropriate settings for the delivery of cancer care, e.g., institutional, primary care, home-based care
7Critically analyse the interface between people with cancer and their carers and service providers, including the role of voluntary organisations

·Implications and examination of international and national health strategies (e.g. National Cancer Strategy) and cancer prevention strategies, (e.g. revised European Code against Cancer).
·Examination of the role of agencies such as National Cancer Forum, World Health Organisation, and National Cancer Institute.
·Health promotion, cancer prevention in primary care, secondary and tertiary care.
·Cancer epidemiology and screening- incidence prevalence of specific cancers
·Sociological perspectives on health inequalities, particularly the relationship between socio-economic factors and health related to cancer risks.
·Cancer pathophysiology, carcinogenesis, manifestations of cancer (signs & symptoms) interpreting theoretical knowledge and clinical data.
·Heriditary, genetic and other risk factors for cancer.
·Issues around screening for cancers
·Diagnosis and staging of cancer.
·The impact of a cancer diagnosis on patient, family and wider community-exploring the emerging chronicity of cancer and survivorship.
·Patients' and carers' experience of cancer care, models of patient/carer advocacy, including voluntary sector initiatives such as the hospice movement.
·The concept of partnership amongst service users, carers and health professionals including frameworks and models of service delivery in cancer care.
·Philosophical and ethical issues in providing health care to people with cancer.
