Module Aims
To provide a review of different approaches to research. To engender reflexivity and critical thinking. To encourage trainees to incorporate research into practice.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes: Ability to design a research project. Acquisition of research skills through experience . Appreciation of ethical issues in research. Capacity to critically evaluate research. Ability to apply understanding to record keeping and case management. Ability to make use of research findings in practice.

Why research: aims and goals of research. Critical and reflexive stances: the production of research. Elements of research procedure: Design, data collection and analysis. Experiential methods: Design, internal and external validity. Survey methods: Sampling and survey design. Measurement: Reliability and validity. In depth interviews: Design and analysis. Case studies: Selection and observation. Quantitative and qualitative data: Analysis and interpretation. Generalisability of research findings. Ethical issues. Research in practice.
