Description

This module provides an in-depth analysis of the interaction of political, economic and social forces in nineteenth century Ireland culminating in the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty.

Learning Outcomes

1. Evaluate the importance of the Act of Union, in providing the context for the main developments (political, social and economic) that occurred in Ireland in the period 1800 - 1921.
2. Assess the significance of the political campaigns of Daniel O Connell in the period 1800- 1847.
3. Discuss the importance of the Land Question to Irish politics and society in the period 1800 – 1921.
4. Identify the main consequences arising from the emergence and development of Nationalism and Loyalism/Unionism in Ireland in the period 1850 - 1921.
5. Explain the reasons behind the emergence and development of Republicanism in Ireland in the period 1798-1921.
6. Determine the extent to which religion was an influence in Irish politics and society in the period 1800 – 1921.
