Description

The purpose of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude to become a lifelong personal and professional learner and to appreciate the profession of nursing. The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, optional computer skills labs and a group project facilitated by a lecturer.

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss the importance of professional development in nursing paying particular attention to the issues of accountability, responsibility and confidentiality.
2. Understand the basics of Information Technology (IT) in accessing information, communicating and processing documents.
3. Identify the sources of information that contribute to nursing knowledge i.e. use of library, accessing databases and referencing skills.
4. Understand how to apply the conventions of academic writing, effective study skills and habits to promote lifelong personal and professional development.
5. Describe the factors that contribute to stress and discuss the use of stress management techniques.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Academic writing
The conventions of academic writing will be discussed and applied to other module assessments.

Basics of information technology
The acquisiton of IT skills in accessing information, communicating and processing documents.

Life long learning
Gain insight into individual learning style and understand how to apply effective study skills and habits to promote lifelong learning both professonally and personally.

Professional responsibilities, confidentiality and accountability
Provide an introduction to the nurses code of conduct especially in relation to confidentiality, accountability and responsibility.

Stress management
Provide an introduction to the concept of stress and discuss the use of some stress management techniques.
