Description This module will enable the student to undertake an in-depth study and critical review of Cognitive- Behaviour Therapy (CBT). They will gain an understanding of core behavioural principles and cognitive approaches as they have developed. The student will be introduced to the changing nature of the therapeutic process at each stage of therapy from initial engagement to the end of therapy. Over the course of the module it is anticipated that the student will gain an in-depth understanding of the centrality of the therapeutic alliance/relationship,develop relevant personal qualities, core skills and techniques of CBT,address and develop competence in client intake and assessment procedures and case formulation and finally consider ethical issues as they arise in CBT. Students are expected to engage with required reading and classes,seminars and tutorials. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the central tenets and rationale of CBT and discern the strengths and deficits of this approach 2. Debate conceptual accounts of the therapeutic relationship from CBT perspectives and its evolution 3. Demonstrate a competence in essential counselling and psychotherapy skills such as active listening, communicating empathy, rapport building, and reflection, paraphrasing, summarising, appropriate questioning and awareness of non-verbal communication 4. Have a clear rationale for utilising the CBT approach in practice 5. Collaboratively agree therapy goals developed from a case conceptualisation that reflect the client’s desired outcomes 6. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the qualities that may promote effective communication and relationship building in a therapeutic setting 7.
