To equip student teachers with the ability to define, create and maintain an effective learning environment. To introduce students to contemporary approaches in a range of teaching & learning skills. To develop confidence in a range of initial teaching skills through reviews, analysis, demonstration, peer coaching and guided feedback To provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the content and assessment methodology of the Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle curricula in curriculum Science in second-level schools. All students are required to participate in Micro-teaching as part of this module.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the content, methodology and assessment techniques of the Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle syllabus in curriculum Science as taught in second-level schools
2. Map an appropriate teaching scheme for the Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle Syllabus in curriculum Science as taught in second-level schools.
3. Articulate and relate the appropriate teaching methods and specific challenges in delivering curriculum Science as taught in second-level schools.
4. Design a range of resources appropriate for use in the teaching curriculum Science as taught in second-level schools.
5. Work in collegiality with colleagues in the interests of sharing, promoting, developing and supporting best professional practice in the teaching of Science in second level schools.

Planning
Lesson and Scheme planning for Junior and Senior Cycle 2nd level teaching with particular reference to aims, learning outcomes, methods and assessment

Skills Development
Introduction to core teaching and microteaching skills including lower and higher order questioning and varying stimuli

General Methodologies
Introduction to general methods including participative learning methods including, role play, group work and pair work, teacher exposition, concept development and teaching texts

Curriculum and Resources
Exploration and analysis of syllabus, Special Education and diversity

Methodologies for teaching science
Practical classes, Inquiry based learning, Problem based learning, integrating ICT into science teaching, data logging, differentiating science, appropriate assessment for science teaching, using media in science teaching (text, video, animations), teaching data representations through science episodes
