Description

This module analyses developments in Europe from the revolutions of 1848 to the break up of Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and the emergence of Europe and the European idea.

Learning Outcomes

1. Analyse the principal developments in European history from the revolutions of 1848 to the breakup of Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and the emergence of the European Union, in the context of the way different societies, economies and political systems work
2. Evaluate the main changes in European society and economy and their influence on the wider world up to the outbreak of the First World War
3. Reflect on the consequences of world war, revolution and economic depression which affected Europe, Russia and America after 1914
4. Appriase the causes, course and aftermath of the Second World War and the impact of the Cold War on Europe s overseas empires
5. Analyse the political, social and economic conditions of Western and Eastern Europe after 1945 and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989
