Description

This module is designed to build on the module Personal and Professional Development 1. Principles of effective study and academic writing are addressed in a more detailed way. Aspects essential to nursing such as recognising the variety of information sources which contribute to nursing knowledge and issues around the importance of documentation are included. The module also deals with specific methods to provide evidence of learning in the clinical area such as reflection. Students also continue to work on their computer skills with particular emphasis on word processing and presentation software. The module emphasis the importance of a sound basis in the Irish Legal System as it relates to the nurse. Students are provided with theoretical instruction on criminal, constitutional and civil law, the Irish legal system, relevant legislation underpinning health and safety, patient care, protection of data, freedom of information and regulation of the nursing profession. Issues of consent, confidentially, guardianship and negligence are also explored.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the information sources and the skills needed for academic writing and presentations.
2. Examine the basics of objective and goal setting and appreciate the importance of assessment and feedback.
3. Appreciate the role of the reflective process.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the Irish Legal System and explore statutory legislation.
5. Explore the concepts of duty of care, tort and negligence and the implications for nursing practice.
6. Utilise information technology for assessment submission and presentations.
