Description Starting with the work of writers inspired by the revolutionary fervour of the late eighteenth century this module examines English literature of the Romantic and Victorian periods in their cultural and historical contexts. As well as its focus on poetry and prose fiction, the unit looks at drama and film. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Critically analyse the principal characteristics of Romantic and Victorian literatures 2. Compare and contrast, in a critical manner, the ways in which male and female writers responded to social and political developments during the Romantic and Victorian periods 3. Critically assess the concept of Romantic subjectivity with reference to poetry and fiction 4. Critically examine the influence of the Gothic in Romantic and Victorian texts 5. Critically evaluate how Victorian writers explored the place of the individual in society 6. Critically assess the influence of religion and belief on literature 7. Critically evaluate the continuities and discontinuities between two well-established literary periods and reflect on the question of literary periodization 8.
